May I venture to point out however that when Mär.

Baker was appointed as Engineer of Ways and Works I hardly think

it was contemplated that he would be called upon to take the

entire charge and technical responsibility for the construction of

a new station involving the expenditure of perhaps £250,000. Under

ordinary circumstances, had a Government or Local Architect been

appointed for this work, he would have been available for inspect-

-ion during construction and any question that arose could have

readily been discussed, advice exchanged, and personal inspection

arranged for.

This will not be possible now as lir. Hubback lives

at Kuala Lumpur, and so Mr. Baker's responsibilities will be considerably increased in settling technical difficulties that may

arise during construction, and the Architect must to a great

extent be dependent on him when questions of such a nature arise.

Under these circumstances I beg that the recommenda-

-tion contained in my minute of 13th.. February, 1913, may receive

reconsideration.
